Guilford Courthouse National Military Park

Guilford Courthouse National Military Park is located on New Garden Road in Greensboro

This park is so beautiful and so serene that it is hard to believe that it was the site of such bloodshed during the Revolutionary War.  On any given day, you can find people using this park for fitness training, picnicking, and just relaxing and enjoying nature.

On March 15, 1781. the largest, most hotly-contested battle of the Revolutionary War's Southern Campaign was fought at the small North Carolina backcounty hamlet of Guilford Courthouse.
Major General Nathanael Greene, defending the ground at Guilford Courthouse with an army of almost 4,500 American militia and Continentals, was tactically defeated by a smaller British army of about 1,900 veteran regulars and German allies commanded by Lord Charles Cornwallis. After 2 1/2 hours of intense and often brutal fighting, Cornwallis forced his opponent to withdraw from the field. Greene's retreat preserved the strength of his army, but Cornwallis's frail victory was won at the cost of over 25% of his army.
Guilford Courthouse proved to be the highwater mark of British military operations in the Revolutionary War. Weakened in his campaign against Greene, Cornwallis abandoned the Carolinas hoping for success in Virginia. At Yorktown, seven months after his victory at Guilford Courthouse, Lord Cornwallis would surrender to the combined American and French forces under General George Washington.

Guilford Parent Academy

I'm so excited to find out that Guilford County Schools will be offering the "Guilford Parent Academy", beginning in January 2011, to provide trainings and information to parents and other family members to help their child succeed in school.  As a parent of 5 children, ranging in age from 13-24 years old and with functioning levels from profound cognitive disabilities to gifted AND new to the area, it is a welcome opportunity for me to learn about our schools/community and to meet new people.

If you are interested in getting involved, please contact:

Eden Drive-In

Posted by Picasa
Located approximately 30 miles north of Greensboro, the Eden Drive-In is the ultimate in family entertainment at an affordable price.  The double feature costs $5. a person for ages 12+ and $2. per child, ages 6-11.  This theater prides itself on its family atmosphere and anyone caught using profanity will be ejected without a warning.

My family and I like to make a night out of our visit.  We usually shop at a dollar store for goodies and candy, pick up dinner at one of the many fast food restaurants in the area and then camp out with our blankets and folding chairs.  Gates open at 7p and the movie usually starts at 9p.  It gives families plenty of time to eat, play games and spend quality time together before the movies begin.

On any given night, you can find families with their pets, playing catch with their children and even barbecuing on a hibachi grill.

The drive-in has a concession stand on its premises with relatively decent prices, there are picnic tables both near the concession stand and in front of the big screen and a playground for the kids.

Cove Creek Gardens

Located at:
4505 Summit Ave
Greensboro, NC 27405

As part of his summer of service program, JR SLICC, my son, Adam, volunteered at Cove Creek Gardens. He was immediately struck by how patient and kind both Nancy Cavanaugh and Julia Blizin (co-founders of the garden) are.  Before and after every session, Nancy greeted everyone with a warm hug, it instantly made Adam feel comfortable and at ease with her and the thought of doing gardening in the intense heat of the summer bearable.  I recommend that everyone that has an interest in the beauty of nature to stop in and visit this place.  You will never believe that this peaceful place sits amongst homes and businesses on a busy street like Summit.

"Cove Creek Gardens is a public teaching garden which promotes the art of horticulture and demonstrates the conservation of water and native plants while providing the public with opportunities for research, learning and interaction with the Natural World."

SLICC

This summer, my son, Adam, participated in the JR SLICC program through the Volunteer Center of Greensboro.  I have to say that this experience could possibly be one of the better things that has happened to him.  Through this experience, he learned about the needs of the Greensboro community, developed an inspiring work ethic and met some wonderful people.  He is the first from his group to complete all 100 hours and still volunteers.  We are so proud of him!
To learn more about SLICC, please contact the Volunteer Center of Greensboro

The office is in the United Way building, directly across from the Red Cross.

  • 1500 Yanceyville Street
  • Greensboro, NC 27405

From the Volunteer Center of Greensboro's website:
SLICC helps young people connect community service to other forms of civic engagement by combining learning activities with community service and reflection. After participating in SLICC, youth understand the importance of active citizenship and have the knowledge and skills necessary to actively serve their community.
Campers spend part of each day learning from experts in the field and engaging in critical thinking activities and reflection exercises. The rest of the day is spent putting what they’ve learned into action through service learning projects at the host nonprofit."

Greensboro and the Underground Railroad

All these years I've been taught that the Underground Railroad began with Harriet Tubman (or its what I remember), but while reading several books this past weekend, I found out that the Underground Railroad actually began in Greensboro, at the present site of Guilford College, with the Quakers.  The "President of the Underground Railroad" was Levi Coffin, who was born near New Garden, in Guilford County.
